Being the only certified organic farmer in Wake County is a daunting task. “Farmer” Fred is the only organic farmer in Wake County and he wants to provide food for the entire community. Having been a farmer for nine years, three years full-time and six part-time years. Having married a woman from Wake County they decided to move back on to family owned property. Living in Willow Springs Fred lives with his family, his wife and two children. Fred doesn’t want to stop. For sixteen and a half years Fred has lived in Wake County. Fred earned his Bachelor’s Degree in business administration at East Carolina University. While Fred owns approximately 30 acres, he is also leasing another 25 acres from his wife’s family that lives just across the street. On their land Fred is growing the vegetables and fruit. His wife has a passion for horses, so they have a horse barn that they rent out. They also have two of their own horses. Fred and his family have eight animals that they call their own, a dog, four cats and a pony. On one hand Fred feels involved in the community, but on the other hand he feels that he needs to have a stronger involvement. Not only is Fred involved in the community by producing food but he also provides his time to coaching, charities, and his church. While growing food on his plot of land Fred is constantly reminded of how blessed he is by being able to share his food with those who do not have the opportunities themselves.

While Fred is an organic farmer that is determined to be the last farm standing, he has noticed Wake County’s land could be managed better. Wake’s growth is specifically irritating for him. Fred believes that Wake County is doing many things right but that they can always improve in some areas.
