Mariano Pagan Martinez, a resident of Jumilla, Spain, is the Director of Operations at the Hoya de los Vicentes Solar Energy Park. Opened in January 2008, Jumilla’s solar energy park produces forty million kilowatts of clean energy per year. In other words, the park produces enough solar energy to power the entire town of Jumilla with a population of 20,000. Remarkably, this use of solar energy as Jumilla’s sole source of electricity prevents the emission of 42,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. A growing trend throughout Spain, the introduction of this solar plant and the dedicated individuals that work to keep them running represent a vital move toward using clean and renewable energy around the globe.
